Scarfing in...

According to my son, who is a whizz with anything to do with wood, the verb 'to scarf' means to cut in a new piece of wood where needed - for example if the old one has rotted away or is damaged.  For your erudition, I quote from Wooden Boat Forum...

This is not boat related (well, not directly - although it will keep me from working on my boat). I have an external door jam on my house that shows rot at the bottom. Can I pull the jam off, cut above the rot, and scarf in a fresh piece and not worry about the rot creeping further? 

...however, in my world of knitting and crochet, there is an entirely different meaning, and Google happily accepts a search for the verb 'to scarf' and comes up with several pages ...

...most of which relate to something worn around the neck - usually textile-based, and often knitted or crocheted (although I do like the Samoyed society link)...
