Edible Breadable!!!

Yeah - it tastes like bread! Even looks like it (a bit).
..but it wasn't all plain baking....

I started by weighing out all the ingredients carefully, and even read the instructions (!) because I'd been told that the wholemeal recipe started with a pre-heating cycle, which is not good if the yeast has already started working. So I put in the ingredients in the correct order, with the liquid at the bottom, so that the yeast (on top of the flour) did not touch it in that first cycle.

Eventually it started to mix, and I couldn't resist a sneak peep. What I saw was batter! What was this, I thought - I'm making bread, not pancakes, and checked that I had put in the correct amount of ingredients. I was a bit surprised to see that the amount of flour was almost half that for the white bread recipe, but I was determined to follow the instructions....

After about half an hour it was still batter, so I got out my spatula, opened the top of the machine, and whizzed the mixture round to check there was no spare flour lurking at the bottom (there wasn't).

After another hour I decided I would have to intervene, and just added some more flour to the now very spongy batter. I mixed it up and left it.

It came out quite well, considering, and has a nice texture and good flavour.

Later, I was bemoaning the vagaries of the machine to Ian's mum, Eileen, when she suggested that I had might have missed out half of the flour, as wholemeal bread machine recipes always use HALF wholemeal flour and HALF white. She was right, of course!

Ho hum, maybe I'll get it right next time!

Perhaps we preferred the dog turd one...

Dog turd bread looks more artistic, but this one looks more edible.
