Tony Robinson - Help!!!!!

I always wanted to be an archaeologist, but my Dad said there would be no jobs going for a woman... probably right - I'm not at my happiest when digging, either. The ground is too wet, or too dry, and normally there's nothing more interesting than roots. But today, my first find was ...a toad!

I was actually trying to plant a lavender hedge, but after cutting out a section of grass and separating as much soil from the roots as possible, I started to dig in with the fork to break up the soil. At the first end I discovered the grass was actually suspended over a large hole and when I looked in the hole, there was the toad. It was a struggle to get her out - she was a very fat female - and I had to dig out a big stone that was directly under her. She was very grateful (I think) to be rescued from certain death by garden fork, and put in another part of the garden.

When I carried on my forking, I came across another, much larger, stone in virtually the same place. I had to dig all round and remove a foot of soil to find the edges. It was pretty big...

...and it was hard work getting it out. The Time Team would have been proud of me.

So I put in my lavender hedge...

...and decided I could use the large hole where the stone was, to plant a hydrangea that really needs to come out of its pot. However, when I put the fork in to loosen the sides of the hole, I found another stone!

So I'm afraid that one's just going to have to wait until tomorrow - maybe it's an old patio, or a path, or a Roman temple..... I'm just going to rest my aching back and partake of a glass of wine for medicinal purposes!

Always enjoy your comments what's going on in your garden.

I too wanted to be an archeologist as a child.
