Cool Hand Looc

Silly name, isn't it. I understand that Looc is simply Cool in reverse, but it looks silly! (...and none of them is called Luke...) This is the group that Sue, Ann and I went to see at La Petite Fontaine last night.

According to their website ...Cool Hand Looc is a band of experienced rock musicians, based in the Poitou-Charente / Limousin region of France, who play melodic country-rock music, using material by legendary artists such as Bob Dylan, Crosby Stills & Nash, the Eagles, the Traveling Wilburys, Neil Young and Crowded House'...

...and I read that Looc is verlan ( a kind of slang) for Cool. Which obviously makes the name much less silly ...or not!

I think they would have been better at a lower decibel level, 'cos the music was so loud in the cave and the echo so great that even when I knew the song I couldn't make out the words. Anyway - they still seem to have plenty of energy, even though it appears that only one of them can sing...

...although Roger (on the left) did seem to be miming some of the words. (Love you really, Roger)!

As always, I love pictures that show people I know today, in their youth - with long hair when they are now bald, or wearing outrageous flares or hippy clothes from the 60s (I have a few of me like that, but I'm not showing you...) - and here is one I've culled from the Cool Hand Looc website...

...not sure who the drummer on the right is but he didn't feature in the lineup yesterday...

As you can see from my picture, most of the audience can give the band members a run for their money agewise - it must be odd to be playing rock and country music to a bunch of grey hairs - not of all of whom seemed to be enjoying the experience. Some, in fact, were downright rude, talking through the whole performance, and we had to move tables as the lady to my right (she isn't in my photo) never stopped loudly rabbiting on to her companions - until their food came, thankfully.

This morning my ears are still ringing and I think that, next time, I might just sit in the bar, at a distance!

Hi, and thanks for the review.

I'm Roger (the one on the left!). Although I don't do any lead vocals I harmonise on many of the tracks. I certainly don't mime to anything, so don't quite understand the remark.

The name is perhaps a bit whacky, but that's not rare in the music business, and people do remeber it...

Sorry if the volume wasn't to your liking, but the fact that "rude people" managed to talk through the performance tells me that it wasn't as loud as that of most rock bands.

The drummer in the old photo did indeed turn up. It's Ian (the lead singer/rhythm guitarist) in the days when he was a professional drummer. (Hence he can produce sequences of himself actually playing the songs instead of our having to resort to the dreaded drum machine)

Hope to see you at another gig!
