One of the things I find most difficult about making things is the sizing. Especially with hats. Seems everyone has an idea about fit and there is no good guide.
This is a chart from Knitpicks...
...and one from Bev's Country Cottage...
...and I had another from Woolly Wormhead but Blogger won't let me display it, so here's the link.
Now they all say you need NEGATIVE EASE in a hat, and I know that means make it smaller so it stretches to fit... so I tried on the 3 Miranda hats I've made so far...
...well the child size wouldn't go on my head at all, so I'm guessing that'll be good for the 6-10 year old quoted in the pattern, but the turquoise hat measures 19" across when measured across the ribbing on a flat surface, and the pink one measures 20" across.
So - I measured my head - about 1" above the eyebrows - and my head is 21". This is a pre-teen or teen's size according to Knit Picks and Bev's Country Cottage and smaller than an adult though larger than a child or teenager according to Woolly Wormhead!
And the pink hat is ridiculously large on me!
Hopefully the charity I finally give them to will have a wide variety of people with heads of all different sizes! Or should I line them, add handles and make shopping bags?

Something so simple and yet still a minefield! I have the opposite problem, i knit hats because i have a big head! So all the ones in the shops perch on top of my head in quite a strange fashion.
G'day Penny. Oh Penny I did laugh at your photo. I do love the colour you have made the hat in. Yes, it looks just a tad too big. I am sure there is someone out there who will just love it. Take care. Liz...
