Fish on Friday

Today my friend Deborah came round for lunch and a chat.  We are both crafty people (in the nicest possible sense of the word) and I showed her my Molly Makes magazines...

...now don't get me wrong, I like Molly Makes - I even have it sent out here, to France, on subscription!  But sometimes the projects are less than, well, adequately explained.  I showed Deborah my massive stash extensive collection of felting materials and we decided to make the fish (start small) in a recent issue of Mollie Makes.

Yes - that's it in the picture above - shown with the cute bear, which is also a needle-felting project.

It seemed as iff it would be fairly simple, but these were the instructions...

...which were not a lot of help.

However, Deborah stabbed along at her roving and made a commendable fish, sewing on a bead for its eye.

I decided to have a go myself, although my attempts at needle felting have thus far been limited to stabbing a crochet flower onto a piece of felted jumper.  I have to tell you, reader, that I did not acquit myself terribly well.

I made a sort of sea worm at first, that repeated attempts to turn into a fish shape, following those masterful instructions, did not improve overmuch.  Eventually I  gave in and ended with a kind of siamese-fighting-angel fish.  At this point I resigned myself to the fact that needle felting, like sculpture in marble, is probably not my thing...

Somehow I don't think I will be attempting the bear! At least we had a good laugh while doing it, even if mine started out looking like a cross between the Eiffel Tower and Thunderbird 1.

G'day Penny. Debra did a good job of her fish. Your one did make me laugh, but in a nice way Penny. I bought a felting kit at a craft show some years ago and I had a go at it, but I just couldn't get the hang of it either and it is still sitting in a cupboard somewhere, never to see the light of day again probably. Take care. Liz...

Your looks more artistic than mine though Penny. Your massive stash, err I mean extensive collection was great, loads of choice for our next venture! xxx

Maybe you had to have the earlier Molly Makes copy with Gretel Parker's doglet instructions. Like anything else once you get going, practice makes perfect. It really is quite theraputic once you get into it! x Jo
