A Moving Story

No, not me - I'm not moving.  Not yet, anyhow.

I just wanted to say that life is hard when you're on your own.

 Not just the grinding loneliness...

Or the eating alone...

Or the silence of an empty house...

Or the days that pass without talking to anyone...

...are you crying yet?  Well, stop!  It's not that bad. There are bonuses - less ironing, for a start...

But there are daily irritations.  Like not being able to move a chest of drawers.

chest of drawers waiting

how to move it...

If only psychokinesis were possible my problems would be over. But any pscho prefix that figures in my life at present has an entirely different meaning!

I moved my computer upstairs some months ago, as I seem unable to work on it without creating a pile of scruffy papers and print-outs that grow daily and look extremely unsightly.  I wanted a living room where I could put my settees and invite people to sit down without having to move all that junk valuable paperwork.

So I now compute in my bedroom where no-one can see my mess paperless office.

BUT...

...the chest of drawers which holds all my paperwork is still downstairs.

Easy solution.

MOVE IT

...not so easy if there's just one of you and you live in an isolated hamlet with only 4 other houses permanently occupied - one by a slightly mad skinny English lady (my adjoining neighbour), one by a little French lady of 79 years (my neighbour opposite); one rented by a  French family with 7 children, whose parents I have never met and one by a lovely French guy and his partner (who is only there weekends and holidays as she works in a more northerly part of France).

Perhaps it's me, but I hate asking for help anyway - it seems such an imposition...

So - what to do?

I need to get the chest of drawers here...

But the problem is here...

stairs

...and the chest of drawers is made of mahogany and is heavy even when all the drawers are removed.

I don't have a block and tackle and, even if I did I'm not sure I'd know what to do with it!  You probably need two people, even with all that, one to pull on the rope and one to stop the furniture demolishing the pictures...

You see my problem?  It's not easy being alone...

Looks like a "Right said Fred" sort of conundrum to me! Might be easier to move!

Oh I do wish you lived closer...I would loan you my strong hubby and my tall, hunky son....just for moving furniture of course ;-)
Hugs,

I can see your problem. So where do you live? My brother is in Baugé right now and he would come over and help you immediately. He is that kind of a guy.

I have to move furniture alone all the time though. I would put an old carpet under the drawer with its legs into the air. Then I would put thick blankets around the banister and cardboard along the wall. Fix a rope around the drawer and let it slide down carefully and super slowly. You should wear heavy shoes with rubber soles.

Or ask the guy in the restaurant or the grocery store who smiles at you from time to time ... Or the post man? It's safer.

Good luck!

I understand and sympathise totally as I too live on my own and managed to get a very old and heavy kitchen table totally wedged when I decided to move it upstairs without help. In the end I had to saw the legs off and then stick them back on with super strength glue once it was in the room. It'll never come out though! I hope you sorted your conundrum out in a less drastic way :-)
