If I can just find out why it seems to get overtwisted, then I think I shall have made a huge advancement. At least I have mastered the treadling and the drive band doesn't keep coming off now. I can feed in the fibre OK and move the twist along and all that, but it still seems to be very tightly spun, even though I go as slowly as I can to try and control it. Maybe it's to do with the screw that controls the brake?
Listen to me - as if I know what I'm talking about!!!! I must find out what that screw does. Seems like it may control tension... it certainly isn't controlling MY tension!
But the twisting back on itself is less now, so I must be doing something right even if I don't know what!
In the meantime, and to relax me a bit, I've started this hat pattern...
It's another pattern with a rubbish picture that doesn't show the product well at all. There is another picture on the second page of the pattern, but that is not much help either and even Ravelry doesn't have a really good shot...
Inside the brim is a brim 'lining' which is a different colour. I did this in a different way to the pattern instructions. I started with a provisional cast-on and then knitted the two lots of stitches together once I'd started the outside of the hat. Mine looks like this... (though the colour is off)
The actual colour of the lining is right, but the hat itself is much more turquoise/green. This is a better colour match...
It is a bit laborious, being done on a 2.75 mm needle with 4ply! Still, a hat is not a big project!
Ah - I've just come across a much better picture...
My only worry is that, without a stretchy rib, the hat may not fit very well.

your spinning looks lovely and about the same as my first few attempts!
The brake does control your issue, if it is too loose you will get too much twist as it is not drawing the yarn through the orifice fast enough so it twists over and over and over. Try tightening the brake (gently!) as it will pull the fibre through the wheel onto the bobbin faster. Too tight and you will have not enough twist... spinning is such an art, keep practicing and I hope my explaining is helpful to you!
If you're getting too much twist, you can either treadle slower, or draft faster. In addition to the brake adjustment, drafting also depends on the fiber you're using. If it's well-prepared roving without snarls or felted spots, it really helps so you're not fighting the fiber and the wheel at the same time.
