The Comma butterfly was so named because of the 'characteristic' white mark on the underside of the wing which someone (must have been a man) thought looked like a comma.

More like a smiley mouth, I think. Had I discovered this butterfly (which I sort-of did - it was on my window, after all) I would have called it something that more nearly expressed its beauty when the wings are fully extended..
...such as ... "very pretty orangey-brown with rather tatty wing edges butterfly..." Comma, indeed!
