Lepidoptera ( /ˌlɛpɪˈdɒptərə/ le-pi-dop-tə-rə)

Or butterfly, as I prefer to call it. In this case, a Comma.  Settled on (of course) the only window in the house that I still have not painted...

Comma

The Comma butterfly was so named because of the 'characteristic' white mark on the underside of the wing which someone (must have been a man) thought looked like a comma.

More like a smiley mouth, I think.  Had I discovered this butterfly (which I sort-of did - it was on my window, after all) I would have called it something that more nearly expressed its beauty when the wings are fully extended..

...such as ... "very pretty orangey-brown with rather tatty wing edges butterfly..."  Comma, indeed!
