Half-Pint Headwear

Or, as we call it here at Chez Penny, hats for children...

Yes, I'm on to a new project now that the Wicker Cowl is finished (I wore it all yesterday and it kept me toasty warm!)

But now I'm making some children's hats, from a selection of patterns by The Velvet Acorn.  I have started the Lilian Beret (my grandmother's name was Lilian) ...



... and, of course, pulled it back a time or two, but now I have almost finished it.

The reason for the frogging was that the yarn specified is 'worsted' weight, which I thought was the equivalent of DK in England.  However, it seems that (at least in this case) it is aran or thicker. I should have known by the needle size but, there you go, I just dived straight in and started it off using some Rowan Summer Tweed.  I thought it looked sort of chunky on the pattern picture but, until I bought the pattern, thought the yarn was probably used double...  I should have looked at the little card I downloaded from the Little Knitting Company - it has conversions for yarn weights as well as needles.

Anyway, the ribbing was OK so I pulled it back to there and didn't change to a larger needle for the main part.  It seems OK so far and I'm on the brim now. I will probably crochet a flower rather than do the felt one, as that would not be washable... or I might just sew on a large button.
