Pattern for Creme Egg Chick or Hen

If you're interested, this is Joy's pattern for the hen or chicken.

Easter Chicken or Hen – will take a crème egg
Pattern c/o LemonDrizzleCake’s mum, Joy

Size 11 needles, DK wool in suitable colour

Chicken/Hen Body

Cast on 32 sts

Row 1. K.

Row 2. K, inc 1 st. at each end (34 sts)

Row 3. K, inc 1 st. at each end (36 sts)

Row 4. K, inc 1 st. at each end (38 sts)

Row 5. P.

Row 6. K 18, inc. in next 2 sts, K 18 (40 sts)

Work 5 rows in st. st. commencing with a P row.

Row 12. Cast on 2 sts, K to end (42 sts)

Row 13. Cast on 2 sts, P to end (44 sts)

Row 14. K

Row 15. P

Row 16. Cast off 13, (K2 tog, K1) 5 times, K2 tog, cast off rem 13 sts (37 sts)

Row 17. Rejoin wool to centre 12 sts, P5, P2 tog, P5 (11 sts)

Row 18. (K1, inc in next st) 5 times, K1 (16 sts)

Work 7 rows st. st, commencing with a P row.

Row 26. (K2 tog, K5) twice, K2 tog (13 sts)

Row 27. P

Row 28. K2 tog, K3, K2 tog, K4, K2 tog (10 sts)

Break off wool and thread through rem 10 sts, pull up tightly and fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing up.

Sew up chicken/hen, leaving bottom edge open to take crème egg.

Chicken Only

Stuff the head and run a thread around the neck and draw up tightly. Fasten off and sew in the ends. Sew 2 eyes with black yarn, and a beak in orange or red, or stick on a triangle of felt, doubled, as shown in picture.

Tie a bow round the neck with narrow ribbon or plaited yarn.

Hen only

Wings (make 2)

Cast on 10 sts loosely.

Row 1. K, inc in every st. (20 sts)

Row 2. P

Continue in st.st., dec 1 st at ea end of every row until 6 sts remain.

Break off wool (leave a long end for sewing to hen) and draw through the 4 sts. Fold in half and sew up, RS out. Attach to hen.

Comb – (Red 4ply and No 14 needles)

Cast on 7 sts.

Row 1. K

Row 2. K1, (YRN, K2 tog) 3 times

Row 3. K

Row 4. P

Cast off. Fold in half, sew cast-on and cast-off edges tog. Sew to head of hen, biased to the front.

Beak

Cut to shape a small piece of red felt and sew to hen.

Stuff the head and run a thread around the neck and draw up tightly. Fasten off and sew in the ends. Sew 2 eyes with black yarn.

Tie a bow round the neck with narrow ribbon or plaited yarn.
