Metis Sheets

Several years ago I bought some old French sheets - some of which were completely unused and perhaps not so old...  most are marked 'TOILE METIS' and 'fleur bleue'...

Fleur bleue

This material makes a beautiful base for embroidery, so today I cut up one sheet...

cutting the pieces

overlocked the edges...

Finishing the corners

and washed the pieces so they would be pre-shrunk...

pre-washing

It made 64 pieces!

64 pieces of linen

64 pieces

I found some of my transfers, chose a couple and ironed them on...

Transfer 1

...unfortunately I have had the transfers for some years, and the result was a bit disappointing, as they did not transfer very well.  I'll have to go over them with a pencil or something (I have a water-soluble transfer pen somewhere) so that I can see to embroider!

It's almost impossible to get that sort of transfer now.

Funnily enough I was going through my old transfers recently. I imagine some of them wouldn't give a perfect finish. Hope you can draw in yours because that is a lovely crinoline lady.

Well, I found my water-soluble pen, but it's not really fine enough... I tried it a bit and it has slightly run into the fibres, so I'm going to try a hard, sharp pencil tomorrow.

Penny what a great idea using the sheets, you certainly got plenty of squares out of them.
What are you planning to do with the embroideries?
I love the Crinoline Lady embroidery....
